Castles of Bellinzona are the group of three castles, towers and defensive walls which forms citadel around the city.
Bellinzona is the capital of the canton Ticino in Switzerland. The architecture, houses, streets – everything is charming and has feeling of Italy there. It’s the beautiful city surrounded by mountains and impressive old fortifications.
Bellinzona is famous for its castles: Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro. Because of its location, the city was always the strategic line of defence and important connection point in the Alps. The first people who realised this importance were Romans. They built the first castle, later, in the middle ages others castles were built. All three castles together with the defensive walls and the towers form a very strong fortification system around the city.
The castles are located above the city. Therefore, after I hiked to the top of the hills to the castles I could enjoy a spectacular view of the Old Town. Castelgrande Castle is the oldest castle. It connects to Montebello Castle with the defensive walls. Sassy Corbara Castle is the highest castle and located separately on the rocky peak.
The castles have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
