Unfortunately this year the last day of the tournament, on 26th of February, has been cancelled after the first race. During the first race, the ice on the track cracked and water, which came up, led to the accident of three horses! One of the jockeys, George Baker, was severely injured and taken to a hospital with a medical helicopter! His horse, Boomerang Bob, was so heavily injured that he had to be humanely dispatched to avoid further suffering! Because of the accident all further competitions were cancelled! :(
After first medical examinations, the hospital released the positive news that jockey George Baker had not sustained any serious injuries.
My sincere condolences about the loss of Boomerang Bob! I wish George Baker to get better soon and have a fast recovery!
Nevertheless, there was a winner in that dramatic race. Footprintinthesand with the jockey Christophe Soumillon in the saddle has won the race.
Thomas C. Walther, President of the Management Board of the St. Moritz Racing Association, assured that there was no danger for spectators anywhere on the lake. People were very supportive! Everyone agreed with the decision and showed full understanding with applauses. Most of spectators, approximately 10 000, stayed at the lake and enjoyed the following program.
The atmosphere during the event is always incredible!
